Choosing a Local Assembly

"Not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

Church is a loaded place to be. When we gather together, God works in more ways than we can understand. What happens in Church, and why is gathering that important? According to the epistle to the hebrews, there's quite a lot going on.

In zion, the city where the living God resides, the invisible Jerusalem is populated by throngs of festive angels and Christian citizens. It is the city where God is Judge, with judgments that make us just. Jesus is there, who performs the new covenant in our lives, a fresh charter from God. The Holy Spirit is everywhere, doing everything, all at once.

What else, people. In every stage and phase of life. Partaking in the love feast Christ has gathered to himself. Church is a big deal. That being said, there are so many false churches out there. How can you select a good church in the country where you live?

A good church is mindful of local laws and openly honoring them. The Church is not a stand-alone entity but an active and aware member of larger human society. When this basic theology isn't there, we've got a rouge Church.

A good church enjoys the liberty of the Spirit. Spiritual gifts are good and important to a local assembly, and the liberty of the Spirit is even better. You'll soon become yourself in their midst because they are not pressuring you into anything.

A good church has a love for the Word of God. Not just in good sermons but also in organizational order that reflects knowledge of the Scriptures. Good churches are hard to come by these days, but it is worth everything once you find one.

If you find an assembly with these attributes, that's a good family, receive them with an open spirit and be submissive, and watch God roll his sleeves up, getting to work in your life.
