Let's talk about sin

Sin is not a verb, It's a noun. And it's the reason why we are in such a mess. This planet, right now, what a mess. We may very well be at the lowest point in human history. We've attained extremely high levels of technological advancement, but it has only made life more frantic. There's more money, but it hasn't helped. The average urban dweller boasts far more than kings of mere centuries ago. Wisdom exists for peace and stability, it appears there are more conflicts in the horizon.

Beauty has reached an epic level, with almost every person understanding what it takes to command attractiveness. Yet we have never been more lonely. Today, divorces are at an all-time high, and most people go to bed alone. There's now far more wisdom to produce food for half the world over, and yet half the human population is very hungry. What a mess.

God's diagnosis for the predicament we are in is called sin. All have sinned. Not just petty theft, or plain idolatry, but original sin. It sounds simple until we realize that sin is an evil force, probably beyond the capacity of human understanding. Here's how the Bible describes sin:

"Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. ROM6:12(NIV)

The capacity for sin to 'command obedience' to evil desires makes it more than a verb. It's not limited to what we do. The verse above seems to portray it as a noun, with its own life force, and can make demands of us, whether we want to or not. That's a more accurate picture of original sin, and it is from this noun that Jesus delivered us on the cross. It is from this noun that God looked away and forsook his son.

I've heard it theorized that there's a picture of salvation similar to Moses' ten plagues in Egypt. Apparently, there are ten major deities in Egypts' underworld. God delivers Israel through ten major plagues. Each plague purchasing for us a total victory, in Christ Jesus. It is to this extent that God has bought us back from death. Hallelujah. The Salvation of Christ completely dealt with the issue of original sin in all its forms.

Deliverance from sin, original sin, is what converts an ordinary person into a child of God. Lost, now found. Blind, now seeing. Headed for destruction, now redeemed.
