Let's talk about sinning

Sinning will destroy you. Of course, it seems like you know one theory in the Bible, that's grants an unlimited license to sin. It's a lie. We talk of God's mercy towards David, and that's true. There's more to the story. Psalm 51 indicates a hell that David went through. The Psalms are powerful because they come out of experience, not theory.

Roughly 3000 years ago, long before the Prophecy itself was fulfilled, King David utilized the atoning work in the Blood of Jesus. First question is, how did he know? It was revealed. He was given a divine revelation of the atonement. Through revelation, everything that belongs to God that we need is already available now. But we have to be listening. We get a clue to the atonement through one word:

PSALMS 51:1(NIV) "Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion BLOT out my transgressions"

In the old covenant, the sins of Israel were merely covered. Being covered, they had to be done yearly. Through revelation, David realized there was a greater provision, where his sins could be erased. That's what it means to blot out. But what led to this was what had happened to David as a result of sin. He had some terrible experiences.

PSALM 51:11 (NIV) "Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me."

For a person who was fighting dogs and lions and bears, probably both in a physical sense and a symbolic sense, David needed the presence of God. His unique verb was threatening to take this away from him. He had also seen Saul lose God's Spirit. Nothing really worked out for Saul after that. It was hit and miss and confusion, eventually leading to suicide. That's the kind of horror sins are capable of creating. Yeah, sin creates. It's a force beyond our understanding.

PSALM 51: 14 (NIV) "Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness."

Up to that point, David had killed thousands. According to eye witness account 'tens of thousands', he had never felt guilt. Now he kills this one man, and he's plagued with guilt. The greatest of all guilt the guilt of bloodshed. An innocent humanity had not yet understood the severity of murder, so when Cain killed Abel, it felt like he had done nothing. God loads punishments on him until he comes to the realization of wrongdoing and crumbles. David probably felt terrible over this one thing. Finally, David, a musician, could no longer sing. People who can sing love to sing. Sin was threatening to take this, too, from the singer and songwriter. David realized these things are the consequences of sin. He experienced renewal and then wrote PSALM 51.

The revelations in Psalms 51 probably came to David as a crisis. That's an assumption on my part. The Bible does not implicitly state that. We can be certain of this. The unique verb in his life altered his circumstances. That is why we don't sin.
