No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
John 13:8
The Apostle Peter first encountered Jesus after the Messiah used his boat to preach a sermon. After that Jesus instructed him to cast his net and they caught more fish than they could carry.
The Bible said Peter left everything and followed Jesus, everything except his self nature. After that experience, Peter saw Jesus do even more things, yet he constantly opposed The Lord.
In our text Today, he was forbidding the Lord to wash his feet, on another occasion he took Jesus apart and began to rebuke him for saying he would die. Jesus rebuked Satan. Later on he cut of a Servant's ear at Jesus's arrest.
When finally he denied the Lord before a young maid, Peter realized himself. The Bible says he went and wept bitterly. The weeping is important for a grown man. Peter finally realized that self and God could not be in agreement.
Peter surrendered his 'self' to God, and his Faith entered the next level. On Pentecost he came on fire, he raised the dead, preached to the Gentiles and saw multitudes healed. He even accepted his mode of death.
This is what genuine Repentance does, it leads us into mature Faith in God.
